24/08/2008, The 2008 AGM
By: John Tripp
Date: 31 August 2008

The 2008 AGM

The AGM was held on Sunday 24th August at 18:30. The AGM organised by John Lawton our 2007/8 chairman, was a great success and was completed within the planned one hour.

There were a number of key issues discussed, notable here was the RYA boat show, which Mandy Stock has kindly offered to run on behalf of the Tasar Association. Our stand in 2009 will be part of, or in conjunction with Signal Lockers Ltd own stand. This is a great and timely offer. It will save the association a considerable sum of money and is timely as Tim Knight who has organised and run the show stand very successfully for a number of years is unable to lead the effort in 2009.

We also discussed the 2011 worlds which should be held in the UK. It was decided to try and run the 2011 Tasar worlds in Torquay/Torbay and using the 2010 UK Nationals (possibly combined with the Europeans again, this needs to be discussed with the European mainland fleets) as a trial run. Pete Ellis and Neil Spacagna have kindly offered to head the team needed to organise these two events.

A new committee was elected, and this will be detailed on the committee page later in the week.

We have been approached by a number of people who would like to help the committee or be a part of it these included: Linda Taylor, Alan Forsyth, Neil Spacagna for the worlds and Roger Pescod has kindly offered to help with the Internet site. If you would like to help the committee or be a member please let us know and if I have missed you off this list please accept my apologies.

A number (Keith Paul, John Lawton, Richard Woodward, John Tripp, sorry if I have missed anyone) of the 2007/8 committee have also offered to serve again this year. Rod Porteous is going to help out with the sailing Clubs but has decided that after 10 years on the committee he would like to stand down. The association is in a healthy position.

I would like to thank all the 2007/8 committee and especially John Lawton (who stands down as chairman now), accepted the challenge to become the Tasar Association chairman without actually expecting or wanting to undertake this role last year. He said in his report that it was probably two years too early so we can hope that in two years he may be able to take the role on again! John Lawton's proposal to have John Tripp become chairman was accepted by those present at the AGM. More on the AGM later in the members area...

30/07/2008, UK Nationals 2008
UK Nationals 2008 Another excuse to enter the event. For all boats who enter before the 11th of August there will be a free event t-shirt for both the helm and crew. All you need to do is pre-enter on the event website (www.torbayweek.co.uk) and you will receive some form of contact within the following few days asking what size t-shirt you require. You do not even need to pay any money, just pre-register on the event website. So the deadline for the free event t-shirt is the 11th of August. Entries will be accepted right up to the morning on the Saturday but pre-entry is appreciated by the event organisers to help them. So there is yet another excuse to go to the Nationals! We look forward to seeing you there. .

23/07/2008, Crew for Nationals wanted.
That was a quick response Duncan Bond will be crewing for Sean at this years Nationals. My son Sean requires a crew for this years Nationals as unfortunately Mandy can not get off work. I have a single room booked and could pick someone up on the way anywhere between Inverbervie & Paignton so this is a great chance to do the Nationals at no cost. If you are interested please contact Colin Tait on 07796660935. .

A slightly updated version of last years measurement guide is available on the website. This has been added due to several requests for it over the past few weeks as people get ready for the nationals. Remember to check your forestay length as if this is not correct it can make a big difference to your boat speed and pointing. To see the guide, click here.

10/02/2008, ENDA ROBINSON-MRS HAPPY
Sadly news has just reached me that Brenda passed away in Thailand earlier in the year after a short illness diagnosed just after she and Frank had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Frank and Brenda are an amazing couple who when not sailing would take off on back-packing holidays doing trips gap year youngsters do, not senior citizens. I could listen to their exploits for hours. In recent years, after selling their boat "Mr and Mrs Happy", they'd turn up unexpectedly at Tasar events and you'd find one or both on the foreshore ready for a hug and to catch up on news. I half expected them to turn up in Phuket, despite an email just before we left the U.K. that they wouldn't be in Thailand but we could use their apartment in Hua Hin if we made it that far after the worlds...typical of their generosity. An interesting lady with a lively, if not wicked, sense of humour, Brenda will be sadly missed. .

05/03/2008, Dinghy Show 2008-See Events

Event reports

First to start were Tim and David Hodges. A perfect meet at 4.30 spoilt by the queue to get into the hall. Stand set up and ready by 6.30. Show opened at 10 am Saturday. Pete and Charlotte John and Jackie were overwhelmed by the number of visitors.... well not really the aisles only seemed to get busy for a few hours around midday. Ken showed up at 11 ish and we were joined at different times by a large number of tasar owners. Enthusiasm waned by 6pm and I don't think anyone made the post show party. If you want to represent Tasar at next years party please go for the Saturday afternoon slot. Sunday was even quieter but we had some great visitors on the stand.

Sarah Ayton came and said hello.... what a babe. If you remember Sarah as the young girl that made Chris Harris interesting in the 90's, well she is still the same age, looks more beautiful but oh so fragile on her lettuce diet. I hope the Olympic coaches wrap her in cotton wool before putting her away at night.

John and Linda, David and Gloria from Bartley came and chatted about the inlands. Sounds great, make sure it's in your diary. Lots of races like Oxford last year and a social event at the same place that most of us will be staying.

Finally Ken and I piled the carpet on the boat and hauled the boat out at about 6.30 Sunday night.

Most of the enquiries I fielded were about technique with crewing being the most in demand. Make sure your crews cleats have been upgraded and plates fitted to move them away from the fairlead. Fit a hook on the kicker and sort out the crews toe straps so that they hardly move when the crew puts their weight on them. Finally come to an event and ask for some personal dinghy park coaching. You may find yourself with a more confident crew.

Final results
Tim and Ken. Lymington and Porthpean
David Hodges. Fishers Green
John and Louis Saunders. Coombs
John and Jackie. Babbacombe
Pete and Charlotte Babbacombe

03/03/2008, Starcross Steamer
Several Tasars made the trip to Starcross to take part in the clubs annual pursuit race. Joining in the 72 boat fleet the Tasars knew that a result would be difficult when started with the Merlin Rockets with the longest leg of the course being a run. Sailing through the fleet Neil Spacagna and Anne Panther, sailing their new boat for the first time, led the Tasars before getting caught in traffic allowing Pete Ellis and Charlotte Birbeck to sail through and into clear air and away. Final overall results were dominated by the Merlin Rockets (7 out of the top 14) with the first Tasar finishing in 16th overall. The other Tasars were spread throughout the fleet. Next event is the Exmoor Beastie at Wimbleball on the 9th of March with several Tasar sailors showing an interest in attending. More details of this can be found on the events page of the website. .

17/11/2007, RYAS Champion Of Champions
RYA Scotland's Champion Of Champions event was hosted at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club on the 17th & 18th Of November. The event was sponsored by Scottish Sailing and the Bosuns Locker. 40 of the top performing Dinghy Sailors from their class Scottish Championships & Scottish Traveller Series were invited to take part. It was great to have the Tasar Class invited again this year. Building on the interest we generated in 2006, the Tasar has now become the most active two handed class in Scotland. Saturday dawned bright & sunny with a moderate SW wind, and conditions looked ideal for the planned 4 races on Saturday plus 4 on Sunday. The 40 boat fleet was split into a fast and slow fleet with 1005 being the cut off. The slow fleet started first followed by the fast fleet 3 minutes later. The wind was a steady force 5 from the SW. Calum and I suprisingly found this to our liking (Calum is still only 6 stone !) and went round the course in 4th place for most of the race. The wind was building steadily throughout the race and we were eventually passed by a Contender from the fast fleet. We were then momentarily passed by a 49er & 800 before they both piled in big time leaving us with a grin from ear to ear. We finished 5th in that race and unfortunately during race 2 the wind increased to 36 knots and the race was abandoned. With no wind on Sunday the event was decided on one race only. We went home pleased that we had shown what the Tasar can do and are generating more interest all the time. Overall Results. 1st Ben Holden Contender Haolifax Sailing Club 2nd Peter Irwin & David Kohler 420 Linlithgow Loch Sailing Club 3rd Robbie Burns & vicky Simpson RS200 Largs Sailing Club 4th Ian Baillie RS300 Dalgety Bay Sailing Club 5th Colin & Calum Tait Tasar Loch Earn Sailing Club I couldnt get the link to copy but the address to a short piece of Utube footage follows with a very short piece of the Tasar going upwind and a rather good Tasar Gybe even if I say so myself !! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKOPqgZDK1o .
